In 1926, professors from the Weihenstephan State Teaching and Research Institute certified: "This is a very special beer, which is finely effervescent like champagne." A completely new beer category was given its name: "Champagne Wheat." Since the mid-1960s, this generic term may no longer be used, as the term is legally protected under EU law for the champagne producers in France.
